Incoterms 2020

INCO 2020 are internationally accepted commercial terms defining the respective roles of the buyer and seller in the arrangement of transportation and other responsibilities and clarify when the ownership of the merchandise takes place. They are used in conjunction with a sales agreement or other method of transacting the sale.

EXW

Ex Works

Under EXW, the seller fulfills their obligation by making the goods available at their premises (factory, warehouse, etc.). The buyer bears all costs and risks from that point onward, including transportation, export clearance, and insurance. This term is commonly used when the buyer wants full control over logistics and costs.

CFR

Cost and Freight

With CFR, the seller covers the cost of transporting the goods to the designated port of destination. However, the risk transfers to the buyer as soon as the goods are loaded onto the ship at the port of origin. The buyer must arrange for insurance separately if desired. This term is mainly used in maritime trade.

CIF

Cost, Insurance, and Freight

CIF is similar to CFR, but the seller is also responsible for providing minimum insurance coverage up to the destination port. The risk transfers to the buyer once the goods are loaded onto the ship. This Incoterm is beneficial when the buyer wants the seller to handle both freight and insurance.

FAS

Free Alongside Ship

Under FAS, the seller delivers the goods alongside the vessel at the agreed port of shipment. From that moment, the buyer assumes all costs and risks, including loading, transportation, and insurance. This term is typically used in bulk or heavy cargo shipments in maritime trade.

FOB

Free On Board

FOB means the seller is responsible for all costs and risks until the goods are loaded onto the ship at the port of origin. Once onboard, the risk transfers to the buyer, who then assumes responsibility for transportation and insurance. This term is commonly used in sea freight.

FCA

Free Carrier

FCA requires the seller to deliver the goods to a carrier chosen by the buyer at a specified location, which could be a port, airport, or transport hub. The buyer bears all costs and risks from that point forward. It is a flexible term applicable to all modes of transportation.

DPU

Delivered at Place Unloaded

Under DPU, the seller covers all costs and risks, including unloading, at the agreed destination. The buyer is responsible only for import clearance and duties. This term is useful when the seller is expected to manage both transport and unloading at the final location.

DAP

Delivered at Place

DAP means the seller is responsible for transporting the goods to the agreed destination, covering all costs and risks up to that point, except for unloading. The buyer handles unloading and import customs clearance. This term is widely used in international trade for various transport modes.
